Some fresh sketches.
And some quick sketches from my camping trip to Lassen Volcanic National Park.

April Fools Day Cartoon!
Here's a fun little April Fools Day Cartoon staring my feisty little gremlins, set on a pranksters favorite day, and exercising a classic prank. A bit rough, but enjoy.

Cartoon of the Day! Catch.
Here is a new cartoon about how something can mess with you, even if it has nothing directly to do with you. I'll call it 'Catch'.
I had an epiphany recently while looking at Disney 'The Illusion of Life' book. I read the whole book over a year ago and was perusing it recently when I stumbled across some storyboards from 'Peter Pan'.
They where shaded in, displayed depth, light, different planes, and controlled the viewers attention beautifully and simply. I realized I must use their work as an example, and apply their principles and techniques it to my own work.
Don DaGradi did a fantastic job on these boards.

Kitty Study
I think that Chuck Jones has drawn some of the most appealing cartoon characters.
I prefer his work from the middle of his career. His early stuff is a little round, bubbly, and over cute (not quite as fluid, successful, or just plain fun as Bob Clampett's stuff from a similar period and style).
And then Chuck's later stuff got a little too angular, stylized, static, and cruel for my tastes. For example how his evolved of Bugs and Daffy's personalities and actions form their earlier states as energetic pranksters, to lazier bullies and shelfish misers. Of course 'What's Opera Doc' is a master piece of his later work and one of my favorites.
Anyway, Chuck Jones was one the cartoon greats. I did a short study of the Chuck Jones Kitty from the cartoon 'Feed the Kitty', also one of my favorites.

New President, New Drawings
Today is a new day with a new president. Here is a little sketch I made of President Obama for my girlfriends preschool classes that she teaches. On today, the day of his inauguration, it is fitting that I throw it up on the blog. There are also some sketches of Jerry, Mickey, and Charlie Dog down below. Enjoy and good luck to us all.

Vector Characters
I love the classic style of 2D hand drawn animation, but vector based animation is everywhere these days and it does have it's advantages in the fast paced and financially tight world we all live in. I do think that with proper understanding of cartoon construction and principles, vector animation can be great and done in a cool style.
Here are a few little vector based animation characters I whipped up.

Happy New Year! More Drawings
Here are some of the more recent drawings I've done in my quest for better drawing and understanding. I used several drawings from old masters in this batch as a guide: Frank Thomas (Hook), Chuck Jones (Charlie Dog), Fred Moore (Mickey), Preston Blair (Jerry and a couple of bulldogs), and even a little Gary Larson guy slipped in there at the bottom.
